Tolox – Charco de la Virgen

Not far from Coín, perched in the mountains of the Sierra de las Nieves, is the town Tolox.

Tolox is known for it’s close proximity to the natural spring Fuente Amargosa and is the starting point for many walks in to the mountains.

The route Charco de la Virgen is about 5 kms and takes you to a spectacular waterfall.

The starting point is at the old water mill El Balneario, just outside of the town’s centre. You soon hear the soothing sounds of running water as you make your way along the river bed in to the green valley.

The water flows down from the natural spring in to the mountains below. Charco de la Virgen is particularly fun as you get to cross the bubbling stream at numerous points on the walk.

The amount of water in the river will vary depending on the time of year you go. I have a feeling there won’t be much left in the heat of the Summer….

Soon enough, you reach the stunning, twenty metre tall waterfall:

Charco de la Virgen – The Virgen’s Pond.

If it’s warm enough (and you’re brave enough!) the pool is perfect for a refreshing dip.

Charco de la Virgen is a hidden gem in the Sierra de las Nieves mountains and is a must to explore if you’re ever near Tolox.

PS: If you’re feeling adventurous and want to venture a little further, you can continue walking in to the valley to an even bigger waterfall, La Rejía (a circular, 10km route).
