Just behind Marbella’s coastline is a steep, mountainous region called the Sierra Blanca. Most of the area is wild and uninhabited but one picturesque village stands out on the mountain: Ojén.
Ojén is only twenty minutes from Marbella although it’s quite a climb up from the coast. During the drive, enjoy beautiful views of the hilly pine forests. As you approach Ojén, it’s worth pulling over to admire the village nestled in to the mountainside.

Ojén has a few spots that I recommend visiting.
One is the viewpoint right at the top of the village, carved out of the rock. From here you can admire views over the rooftops right down to the coast below.

Another is the main square where the locals get together. The floor is made of beautiful cobble stones and there are benches for people to enjoy. The plaza has a lovely, lively buzz as people sit out on terrazas and children play happily.
The square’s main attraction is a beautiful old church with walls lined with lemon trees.

The village also has an old olive oil museum which was closed when I was there but I’m sure it’s worth looking around.
Walking around Ojén is pretty tiring as the streets are incredibly steep. It makes you wonder how the locals manage to do their daily errands, particularly older residents or those unsteady on their feet.

Although Ojén isn’t as well known as other Andalusian pueblos like Mijas and Frigiliana, this mountain top village is charming. And the surrounding countryside is spectacular.
