Guaro – Monda

This is a circular route connecting two charming towns: Guaro and Monda, in the mountains of La Sierra de Las Nieves

Guaro

Looking for a rural escape, I spent a few nights in the small town of Guaro, a 45 minute drive from Malaga city.

Guaro is the epitome of a sleepy, Andalus pueblo. Besides it’s impressive Ayuntamiento (town hall) and a few bars, there’s little else to it. The town has numerous walking routes on it’s doorstep; ideal to soak up the mountainous surroundings.

Guaro – Monda

One of the routes connects Guaro to it’s neighbouring town, Monda. Starting at Cafeteria Mocabel, make your way down in to the valley below. Technically a bike route, the wide, concrete path means it’s easy walking.

Once you’ve passed small farms and fincas, you reach the riverbed of the Arroyo Hondo. The valley widens at the bottom, giving beautiful views of Monda and the mountains behind.

Climbing out of the riverbed on to a stony path, you soon reach Monda: a lively town with a very impressive castle perched on the hill above.

Monda – Guaro

The route from Monda to Guaro is even more breathtaking. Walking out of Monda on Avenida de Guaro, turn left at the sign for Marbella Gun and Country Club. Here you have a steep climb up until you reach the start of La Sierra de las Nieves national park. The climb is worth it for the stunning views across the mountains.

The path winds around the hills down towards the river Arroyo Seco. After a few kilometres, you come to a signposted crossing where you can continue on the Chiribetinez route to the river or head back up towards Guaro.

Once you reach the riverbed, there is another option to walk all the way up to Puerto Alto. (See the official walking routes for more details.)

Guaro -> Monda -> Guaro is about 15 kilometres and takes roughly four hours to complete. With such varied landscapes and two white towns to explore, I absolutely recommend it as a day out.
