Rincón de la Victoria

Malaga is blessed with kilometres of flat coastal paths that are ideal for walking, running or cycling. In fact, you can travel long distances along the beach without leaving the shore.

One route is to Rincón de la Victoria, the neighbouring town east of Malaga.

Starting at La Malagueta, it’s about 14 kilometres along the sea until you reach the far end of Rincón. I love doing this route by bike as you can stop off at different places en route.

Crossing the length of Malaga, you go down to Baños del Carmen, past Pedregalejo until you reach the beaches of El Palo.

El Palo is technically the end of Malaga City but the route continues. When you get to the far end of the beach, you pass the sailing club El Candado and then walk next to the road for a while which is a little precarious. Soon you reach a stoned path that leads you along the rock to Peñón del Cuervo beach.

After this beach, the route continues past the cement factory and a small group of houses and then comes back along the coast.

You are now in the neighbourhood of Rincón de la Victoria.

The first beach you see is La Cala del Moral. Here, the bike path branches away from the paseo (promenade) and comes right down on the beach. The ground is compressed which make the path smooth and easy to ride on. It is an amazing feeling cycling on the sand.

After crossing the bay of La Cala del Moral, you get to the most special part of the ride. The cycle path goes through a series of tunnels carved out of the rock. It is also great to walk as there are beautiful staircases that go up and down the cliff edge.

When you emerge from the other side of the tunnel, the promenade bends around into the corner of the bay. There is a small shrine to the Virgin del Carmen made out of the rock.

You have finally reached Rincón de la Victoria. From here the bike path contiues on the sand. Rincón is a wide, expansive beach so you have a fantastic sense of space. The beachfront here has a great atmosphere with plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy.

You can cycle a long way along this part of the coastline. I made it to Chilches where the cycle path stops and the road begins again.

Then it’s time to turn around and enjoy the views as you head back towards Malaga. A 28 km round trip makes this bike ride a fantastically active day out!
