Tucked away high up in the mountains, this whitewashed town is a truly special Andalusian pueblo.
After being discovered by foreigners, Mijas is the richest town in Malaga’s province. Despite this, it has managed to retain it’s charm.
There are a few must see spots:
-
Chapel of Virgen de la Peña
Carved out of the rock, this tiny church was built in honour of the town’s Virgen de la Peña. It is worth peeking inside the grotto to admire its charming interior.

2. El Burro
In front of the ayuntamiento (town hall), is an iron statue of a donkey. The town is famous for the animal and offers ‘burro taxis’ where you can be ridden around on an adorned donkey. However, the animals look rather sad and mis-kept; you are better off posing on the iron figure!
3. Parque La MurallaIf you walk through the town, you get to a small park and a mirador (viewpoint) which boasts spectacular scenes of the province. The park offers stunning views over the coast and the surrounding, unspoilt countryside. It is also a lovely perspective to admire the town, as you appreciate the white houses nestled in to the hills.
4. CeramicsThere are sweet little ceramic shops dotted around the town. The shops are lovely to mosey around and they sell beautiful pottery at a reasonable price, considering the high level of tourism in the area.
In short, Mijas is one of my favourite white towns in Malaga’s vicinity. Despite being taken over by guiris (the name given to anyone who is not a Spainard!), this picturesque place is ideal to wander about.Set in a stunning location, Mijas has a true Andalus warmth.
