Cádiz

After the sizzling temperatures inland, I could hardly wait to get to the coast. Cádiz means one thing: beach. Playa de la Caleta is the city’s main spot and is a perfect place to cool off.

Surrounded entirely by water, the city is on a narrow piece of land that juts out into the sea. This makes it far cooler than the rest of Andalucía. Saying that, wind can be quite a problem here and can get pretty fierce. I was told that strong storms can ruin beach days in the summer.

Cádiz is one of Spain’s oldest cities, founded back in 1100 BC. Being by the beach means the city had a wonderfully relaxed, warm atmosphere. Gaditanos (the people from Cadiz) are known for their good humour and cheerful, bubbly characters.

Cádiz’s old city is characterised by narrow streets and large squares. The centre is very clean and well-kept and has an array of interesting monuments and museums. Parque del Genovés includes lovely botanical gardens with impressive fountains and exotic plants, as well as (bizarrely) British topiary.

Cádiz’s seafront is home to the most beautiful sunsets.

The coastal walk along the old city walls is a great place to wander. Café Quilla, overlooking Playa de la Caleta, is a prime spot to watch the world go by.

You can also make your way up the walkway towards Castillo de San Sebastián which is magical at golden hour.

In the evening, el Mercado Central de Abastos is the perfect place to eat as its different market stalls serve all types of cuisines. I grabbed a beer and a plate of fried fish for only 4 euros.

Side Story: Carnaval

Every February, Cadiz hosts the famous Carnaval; a loud and raucous ten-day festival.  Taking fancy dress very seriously, groups spend the whole year designing vibrant floats and team costumes which are paraded around the city. The dancing and drinking is immense. In fact, they put on such a show that Cádiz Carnaval is watched by the rest of Spain on TV.

This sun kissed, seaside city is a wonderfully happy and peaceful place. Perfect for a short visit.

Next stop: Córdoba
