Es Vedrá

One Sunday a month, a teacher at school organises an excursión, or walking trip on the island. There has been an established group for some time now and after hearing about it during my first moments in Ibiza, I have gone along a number of times.

This year the groups challenge is to visit every torre (tower) on Ibiza. The leaders make the walk informative by explaining a little about the history of each place and telling old stories. I have learnt about how the towers were formerly used, ancient Ibizan customs and have heard many of the islands myths and legends. Unfortunately the explaining is done in ibicenco, as the groups members identify strongly with the language, but there’s normally someone wiling to translate for me afterwards.

Last Sunday, we walked from the small village Es Cubells to Torre d’es Savinar, which faces the famous rock Es Vedrá. The route was fairly challenging but the views we were rewarded with at the end made it all worthwhile. In the sunshine and sharp light, Es Vedrá looked spectacular. We were also lucky enough to go inside the tower which stands majestically looking out over the rock.  Climbing to the top gave you the best perspective, allowing you to soak up the scenery in awe . I don’t know what it is about the rock but it has something special; it’s captivating

Here are a few photos of the islands famously hypnotic landmark taken on that fine Sunday…
